Ballymena Cricket Club stands as one of the oldest and most respected sporting institutions in the area, with a continuous history dating back over 170 years to its founding in 1854. Our story is one of resilience, community spirit, and a deep-seated passion for the game of cricket.
The Early Years & Foundations
1854: The club is formally established, making it one of the earliest cricket clubs in Ulster. Early matches were often informal affairs played on various local estates.
The Turn of the Century: As the game became more formalised, the club began competing regularly against other teams in County Antrim and beyond, establishing its reputation for competitive cricket.
The Move to Eaton Park
A defining moment in the club’s modern history was the move to its current location, sharing the excellent facilities with Ballymena Rugby Football Club at Eaton Park.
Mid-20th Century: The club cemented its home at Eaton Park, providing the dedicated pitches and pavilion necessary to support multiple teams and grow its membership base. This move solidified a lasting partnership with the rugby club, creating a major sporting hub for the town.
Throughout its long history, Ballymena Cricket Club has competed fiercely in the Northern Cricket Union (NCU), producing talented players and securing notable silverware.
NCU Senior Status: The club has consistently competed in the senior tiers of the NCU, acting as a proving ground for many local cricketers who have gone on to represent the NCU and Ulster representative sides.
Cup Success: Over the decades, Ballymena has enjoyed success in various cup competitions, most notably the NCU Junior Cup (often won by the 2nd XI) and various sectional league titles, demonstrating strength and depth across all teams.
Cultivating the Future
Our history is not just about the past; it's about the present and the future.
A Focus on Youth: In recent years, the club has placed a renewed emphasis on its Junior Development Programme. This commitment ensures the long-term viability of the club, providing a robust pathway for the next generation of players to carry the club's legacy forward.
Today, Ballymena Cricket Club continues to uphold the ethos established over a century and a half ago: promoting cricket, fostering community, and striving for excellence at Eaton Park.
Ballymena Cricket Club is fiercely proud of its tradition of developing top-tier talent. The greatest honour for any club is seeing its players reach the international stage, and we celebrate the cricketers who have worn the green cap of Ireland while representing our club.
